Whitby welcomes Tall
Ships
Whitby built the ships that took Captain
Cook round the world on his journeys of discovery.
If you get the chance to see tall ships in Whitby, take it. The town provides a
perfect backdrop for the grace of a large ship brought in under sail.
The
Tall ships race came to Whitby in July 2005
Many of the
entrants in the tall ships race berthed in Whitby harbour on route to
Newcastle, thrilling the large crowds that bustled around the harbour.
HM
Bark Endeavour
The
Australian built replica of Cooks ship Endeavour
returned to its spiritual home of
Whitby for six weeks in 2003. The first
visit, in May 1997 created huge interest. Pictures of her
entry into Whitby
harbour, accompanied by an armada of small boats,
were beamed around the world and she was
welcomed by a cheering crowd of tens of thousands.
She has now returned to Australia and is likely to stay there.

The Grand Turk
The 152 foot Grand Turk

Indefatigable in the TV series Hornblower.
